Naamio

Naamio is a human-centric data platform providing private, federated data storage and services built on open standards. The project has existed in various forms since 2015, evolving through significant changes while maintaining its core commitment to privacy-first architecture, decentralised federation, and limitless extensibility.

Vision

People should control their own data. Not corporations, not platforms, not governments—individuals and the communities they choose to be part of. Naamio exists to make this vision practical.

Current data storage solutions force uncomfortable trade-offs. Convenience requires sacrificing privacy. Simplicity means accepting vendor lock-in. Enterprise capability demands dual licensing that excludes individuals and small organisations. Naamio rejects these false choices.

Principles

Privacy without compromise

Privacy isn’t a feature to be toggled on—it’s the foundation everything else is built upon. Naamio encrypts data by default, minimises metadata exposure, and never requires people to trust a central authority with their information.

Federation over centralisation

No single organisation should control the infrastructure that people depend on for their digital lives. Naamio supports decentralised federation, enabling independent instances to interoperate while maintaining autonomy. Your data stays where you put it.

Open standards

Interoperability matters. Naamio builds on established open standards rather than proprietary protocols. This ensures that data remains portable and that the project can evolve alongside the broader ecosystem rather than creating isolated silos.

Accessible to everyone

Human-centric means everyone, not just technical experts with resources to spare. Naamio is designed to be usable by anyone, deployable on commodity hardware, and available without restrictive licensing that creates barriers to adoption.

Current focus

Naamio Data Space

A distributed data space designed to operate on commodity hardware and low-powered edge devices. Naamio Data Space provides personal and enterprise data storage with extensibility through remote procedure calls, event-driven architecture, and WebAssembly.

The project aims for compliance with international data space standards including those from the International Data Spaces Association (IDSA), while maintaining the human-centric approach that distinguishes Naamio from purely commercial solutions.
